How To Initiate The Online Meet And Greet

So you’ve signed up to a top online dating site, procured the perfect profile, and you’re ready to start meeting potential partners. But you’re not quite sure how to initiate the online meet and greet.

We’ve got you covered. Here’s a list of what to say and, more importantly, what not to say. And remember to mind your Ps and Qs. This is not a quick text to your best friend. Be cognizant of your grammar and spelling.

Acceptable meet and greets:

  • “I was reading your profile and noticed your favorite author is Paulo Coelho. I loved “The Alchemist.” What else have you read by him?”
  • “I see you’re from Cleveland. I grew up just a few miles from the city in Chagrin Falls. Do you get back there much?”
  • “Thank you so much for the message, but you’re a bit out of my age range. Good luck on your search!”
  • “It looks like you do fascinating research work, but I’m looking to make a connection with someone who lives closer to me. Thanks for the message!”
  • “Angela, it’s so nice to meet you. How are you today?”
  • “If you could pick a perfect date, would it include going to the movies or going out dancing?”

Unacceptable meet and greets:

  • “I think you’re hot, want to chat?”
  • “So . . . you’re a dancer?”
  • “Thanks, but no thanks.”
  • “I’m heading to Vegas for a bachelor party, so maybe I’ll message you next week.”
  • “I know we just met, but want to meet for a drink tonight?”
  • “What up! Angela.”
  • “You look perfect for my college buddy, should I hook you guys up?”
  • “My mom just said dinner’s ready. Can we chat later?”
  • “I like to date about five girls at a time.”

Whether you’re initiating a new connection or trying to snuff one out faster than a hummingbird can flap its wings, give your comments some thought. If you’re serious about finding a partner, then do your research, give compliments and open a dialogue — but don’t be creepy.
